Quad ESL 2812X Electrostatic Loudspeaker (pair)
A compact four-panel electrostatic loudspeaker with point-source time-delay design, UK-made audio transformers, and revised electronics architecture
The Quad ESL 2812X brings Quad’s ESL X refinements to a smaller, lighter, and less imposing loudspeaker than the flagship ESL 2912X. Its four-panel design shares the same treble and midrange panels as the larger model, delivering the signature Quad sound with a highly transparent, detailed, and natural presentation.
Like every Quad ESL, the 2812X is built around an electrostatic panel rather than conventional moving-coil drivers. A very light Mylar diaphragm is suspended between stators and driven across its surface, allowing the speaker to respond with exceptional speed, low distortion, and the open, boxless presentation that has made Quad electrostatics famous.
Four-Panel ESL Performance
The ESL 2812X uses a unique four-panel design to deliver much of the character of the ESL X series in a more compact format. At just 42.1" high, it is easier to place than the larger 2912X while preserving the qualities that define Quad electrostatics: clarity, speed, midrange realism, and a sense of the speaker disappearing from the room.
Electrostatic Speed and Transparency
At the heart of the design is an ultra-light Mylar diaphragm, coated with a high-resistance conductive material and suspended between perforated metal stators. Because the diaphragm is so light and is driven uniformly across its surface, the ESL 2812X is exceptionally responsive to transients and notably low in distortion, especially through the midrange.
Point-Source Imaging
Quad’s concentric-ring electrode design, first developed for the ESL-63, is engineered so the sound appears to radiate from a single point in space. A delay-line system feeds the outer rings of the stators with progressively delayed versions of the signal, helping the speaker create a precise, open, and stable stereo image.
X-Level Refinements
For the ESL X series, Quad reworked the electronics architecture, splitting the operational PCB into separate high-voltage, control/protection, and low-voltage signal sections. This physically separates the 5.25 kV high-voltage stage from the lower-voltage circuits, reducing interference and improving stability, noise performance, and signal integrity.
The ESL 2812X also returns to UK-manufactured audio transformers, custom specified for the design and supervised under Quad’s service team. These transformers are intended to improve midrange and high-frequency dynamics, preserve wide bandwidth, and enhance transient attack and microdynamic resolution.
