The McIntosh MC462 is a high-power stereo amplifier delivering 450 Wpc into 2-, 4-, or 8-ohm loudspeaker loads. Dedicated McIntosh Autoformers on each channel allow the amplifier to provide its full rated output regardless of which supported impedance is connected, making the MC462 suitable for a wide range of demanding loudspeakers.

Compared with the preceding MC452, the MC462 increases filter capacity by nearly 50%, raising dynamic headroom from 1.8 dB to 3 dB. The additional energy storage helps the amplifier accommodate large musical peaks while also contributing to improved low-frequency performance.

The MC462 uses McIntosh’s Quad Balanced circuit architecture to reduce noise and distortion within the amplification stages. Four Monogrammed Heatsinks are coupled to the high-current output transistors for efficient thermal management, while Power Guard monitors the signal to prevent clipping and Sentry Monitor protects the output stage against unsafe operating conditions.

Balanced and unbalanced outputs provide additional system flexibility, allowing the signal to be passed to another amplifier for bi-amping or tri-amping, sent to a secondary system, or routed to a powered subwoofer. The amplifier is built on a polished stainless-steel chassis and retains McIntosh’s black glass front panel, aluminum handles, illuminated logo, and pair of fast-responding blue watt meters.

McIntosh’s Quad Balanced topology uses complementary amplifier sections to cancel noise and distortion components within the signal path while providing the current capability required for high-power operation.

Power Guard

Power Guard continuously compares the amplifier’s input and output signals and adjusts the input when necessary to prevent clipping that could otherwise produce harsh distortion or damage loudspeakers.

Sentry Monitor

Sentry Monitor provides fuse-less short-circuit protection for the output stage, disengaging it if current exceeds safe operating limits and automatically restoring operation when conditions return to normal.

Monogrammed Heatsinks

Four McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks are connected to the high-current output transistors to provide efficient thermal management and help reduce thermal equilibrium lag.

Flexible System Connections

Balanced and unbalanced outputs make it easier to add another amplifier for bi-amping or tri-amping, feed a second audio system, or connect a powered subwoofer when additional preamplifier outputs are not available.

Solid Cinch Speaker Binding Posts

McIntosh Solid Cinch binding posts provide secure speaker-cable connections and are gold-plated to resist corrosion.

Power Control
