Marantz PM6007 Integrated Amplifier

45 Wpc class-AB amplification with HDAM circuitry, AK4490 DAC, selectable digital filters, and MM phonostage

The Marantz PM6007 combines high-performance two-channel amplification, digital-to-analog conversion, and extensive analog connectivity in a traditional integrated amplifier. Delivering 45 W per channel into 8 Ω and 60 W per channel into 4 Ω, the PM6007 offers the power and control needed to drive a wide range of loudspeakers while providing convenient access to both analog and digital music sources.

Designed for listeners who want the performance of a dedicated hi-fi amplifier without the complexity of separate components, the PM6007 builds upon the successful PM6006 with upgraded circuitry, a new AK4490 DAC, and refinements to its power supply and phonostage. With five analog inputs, three digital inputs, a dedicated MM phonostage, and a subwoofer output, it can serve as the centerpiece of a complete two-channel music system.

Discrete Class-AB Amplification

At the heart of the PM6007 is a fully discrete class-AB amplifier employing Marantz's current-feedback topology. Its 45 W per channel output into 8 Ω increases to 60 W per channel into 4 Ω, providing the current delivery and headroom required for a variety of bookshelf and floorstanding loudspeakers.

The amplifier incorporates Marantz's proprietary Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules (HDAM), which use discrete components rather than conventional integrated-circuit operational amplifiers in critical signal stages. These circuits are designed to provide high slew rates and wide bandwidth, helping the amplifier respond accurately to rapidly changing musical signals.

The PM6007 uses HDAM-SA3 and HDAM-SA2 circuitry, contributing to a specified total harmonic distortion of just 0.08% across the audible frequency range. A damping factor of 100 helps the amplifier maintain control over connected loudspeakers, particularly during demanding low-frequency passages.

Marantz's Sound Master tuning process further refines the amplifier's performance through careful component selection and extensive listening evaluations. The result is intended to deliver the company's characteristic combination of musical detail, tonal richness, and spacious imaging.

High-Resolution Digital Audio Conversion

The PM6007 incorporates an AKM AK4490 digital-to-analog converter, allowing compatible digital sources to take advantage of the amplifier's carefully engineered analog circuitry. This high-quality DAC supports PCM audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz through the optical and coaxial digital inputs.

Two optical digital inputs and one coaxial input provide connections for compatible CD transports, televisions, digital audio players, and external network streamers. This makes it possible to enjoy high-resolution digital music without requiring a separate DAC.

The complete digital section is enclosed within an additional metal housing to help prevent interference with the amplifier's sensitive analog circuitry. This shielding helps maintain signal integrity and preserve the low-noise performance of the amplifier.

The PM6007 does not incorporate network streaming, Bluetooth, or USB audio playback. Instead, its digital inputs allow a separate network streamer or other digital source to be added while retaining the simplicity and longevity of a conventional integrated amplifier.

Marantz Musical Digital Filtering

The PM6007 introduces Marantz Musical Digital Filtering with two selectable digital filter settings. These allow listeners to tailor the DAC's reconstruction characteristics when playing music through the optical or coaxial digital inputs.

Filter 1 is the default setting, designed to provide a short impulse response and clearly defined stereo imaging. This setting emphasizes the spatial relationships between instruments and the sense of depth within a recording.

Filter 2 uses a different impulse response, producing a presentation that Marantz describes as more immediate and powerful. The two settings provide a convenient way to explore subtle differences in digital playback according to listening preferences and the character of the rest of the system.

Filter selection is available directly from the amplifier or its remote control and applies only to digital audio signals received through the optical and coaxial inputs.

Improved Moving-Magnet Phonostage

For vinyl enthusiasts, the PM6007 includes a dedicated moving-magnet phonostage incorporating an improved circuit design derived from the Marantz PM7000N. This allows a turntable fitted with a compatible MM cartridge to connect directly to the amplifier without requiring a separate external phono preamplifier.

The phonostage employs field-effect transistors (FETs) in its input stage, providing high input impedance while eliminating the need for AC coupling capacitors at that point in the circuit. This simplifies the signal path and helps reduce noise and distortion when amplifying the extremely low-level signal from a phono cartridge.

The phonostage has an input sensitivity of 2.2 mV and an input impedance of 47 kΩ, making it compatible with a broad range of conventional moving-magnet cartridges. Accurate RIAA equalization and a specified signal-to-noise ratio of 83 dB contribute to clean, detailed vinyl playback.

By incorporating a dedicated phonostage alongside conventional line-level inputs and digital connectivity, the PM6007 accommodates both traditional analog listening and modern digital music sources.

Improved Power Supply and Audio Components

The PM6007 incorporates a linear power supply designed to provide stable power delivery while minimizing unwanted electrical noise. Compared with the preceding PM6006, Marantz increased the size of the power supply capacitors by approximately 20%, improving power supply stability during demanding musical passages.

Schottky barrier diodes are used in the power supply for their fast switching characteristics and low forward-voltage drop. These components contribute to efficient rectification and help reduce switching-related noise.

Marantz engineers also selected and refined individual audio components through extensive listening evaluations in the company's facilities in Europe and Japan. The amplifier benefits from carefully chosen capacitors, optimized circuitry, and a robust internal construction intended to preserve musical detail and dynamic contrasts.

An aluminum extrusion heat sink provides thermal management for the output stage, while rigid feet and copper assembly screws contribute to the amplifier's mechanical stability.

These refinements reflect Marantz's emphasis on the electrical and mechanical foundations of sound quality, rather than relying on amplification circuitry alone.

Subwoofer Integration

For systems requiring deeper bass, the PM6007 includes a dedicated mono subwoofer preamplifier output. This allows a powered subwoofer to supplement the low-frequency performance of the main loudspeakers without requiring an external preamplifier or additional source component.

The subwoofer output incorporates a fixed 150 Hz low-pass filter, directing low-frequency information to a connected powered subwoofer. This makes it possible to combine a pair of compact bookshelf speakers with a subwoofer or supplement the bass performance of larger floorstanding speakers.

The fixed filter is not user-adjustable, so final integration can be refined using the crossover, phase, and level controls provided on a compatible powered subwoofer.

Flexible Speaker Connections

The PM6007 provides two sets of gold-plated speaker terminals with Speaker A/B switching. This allows listeners to connect two pairs of loudspeakers and select either pair from the front panel or remote control.

The terminals accommodate conventional speaker cable connections, while the A/B switching arrangement also provides flexibility for installations with loudspeakers in different listening areas.

For listeners using loudspeakers equipped with separate high-frequency and low-frequency terminals, the two sets of outputs may also provide a convenient connection arrangement when used according to Marantz's recommended speaker wiring configurations.

Speaker impedance requirements should be observed when operating two pairs of loudspeakers simultaneously.

Tone Controls and Source Direct

The PM6007 provides conventional bass, treble, and balance adjustments, allowing listeners to tailor the amplifier's response to different loudspeakers, listening rooms, and recordings.

Bass adjustment is available over a range of ±10 dB at 50 Hz, while treble adjustment provides ±10 dB at 15 kHz. A balance control allows the relative output of the left and right channels to be adjusted.

For listeners who prefer a more direct signal path, Source Direct mode bypasses the tone and balance adjustment circuitry. This reduces the amount of processing in the analog signal path and allows the amplifier to operate without additional tonal adjustment.

The combination of conventional tone controls and Source Direct operation provides flexibility without compromising the PM6007's straightforward approach to two-channel amplification.

Dedicated Headphone Amplifier

The PM6007 includes a front-panel headphone output for convenient private listening. This allows CDs, records, and other connected sources to be enjoyed through compatible headphones without requiring a separate headphone amplifier.

The headphone output is rated at 50 mW into 32 Ω, making it suitable for a range of conventional hi-fi headphones. Volume is controlled using the amplifier's main volume control.

Connecting headphones automatically mutes the loudspeaker outputs, making it easy to switch between speaker and headphone listening.

Traditional Hi-Fi Connectivity

The PM6007 provides five analog inputs, including a dedicated MM phono input and four line-level inputs labeled CD, Network, Tuner, and Recorder. This allows a turntable, CD player, network streamer, tuner, and other compatible components to be connected simultaneously.

Gold-plated RCA terminals provide reliable connections and help resist corrosion over time. A conventional analog recording output allows the amplifier to be connected to compatible tape decks and other recording equipment.

Two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input accommodate compatible digital sources. With support for PCM audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz, these connections allow the PM6007 to serve as both an integrated amplifier and a DAC for a conventional two-channel system.

The amplifier also includes Marantz remote-control bus connections, allowing compatible Marantz components to be integrated into a coordinated system.

Classic Design and Everyday Operation

The PM6007 features Marantz's traditional integrated amplifier styling, combining a symmetrical front panel, clearly arranged controls, and a substantial metal chassis. Its appearance reflects the company's long history of two-channel audio components while remaining practical and understated.

Dedicated front-panel controls provide direct access to volume, source selection, speaker switching, tone adjustments, and Source Direct operation. Clearly labeled input indicators make it easy to identify the selected source.

The amplifier is available in black and silver-gold finishes, allowing it to complement a range of audio components and interior styles.

A supplied system remote provides convenient control of the amplifier and compatible Marantz CD players, including the matching CD6007. The PM6007's conventional connections and straightforward operation also make it suitable for systems that may be expanded or upgraded over time.

A Complete Traditional Hi-Fi Amplifier

The PM6007 brings together the essential elements of a serious two-channel audio system in a single chassis: discrete amplification, analog preamplification, a moving-magnet phonostage, high-resolution digital-to-analog conversion, and flexible source connectivity.

Its 45 W per channel into 8 Ω, improved power supply, and HDAM-SA3 and HDAM-SA2 circuitry make it suitable for driving a wide range of appropriately matched loudspeakers, while its digital inputs provide an easy way to incorporate modern streaming devices and other digital sources.

For listeners who value the sound quality, physical controls, and straightforward construction of traditional hi-fi, the PM6007 offers a carefully engineered integrated amplifier that can serve as the foundation of a music system for years to come.
