Final DX6000 Open-Back Headphones
A magnesium-alloy diaphragm, Free Air Structure, and a lightweight OFC cable
The Final DX6000 brings an open-back design to the DX series, pairing a newly developed dynamic driver with a precision-machined aluminum–magnesium-alloy housing. Its magnesium-alloy diaphragm is central to the design, combining high rigidity with high internal damping to help control unwanted resonance. Final describes the acoustic presentation as natural and expansive, with an “ear speaker” character that maintains bass presence without relying on a tightly sealed ear cavity.
Driver and Enclosure Working Together
The diaphragm uses a thick, soft, lightweight foamed-silicone edge, molded directly around the magnesium diaphragm rather than attached with conventional adhesive. Final developed this construction to allow easy movement while suppressing unwanted resonance and avoiding variation from adhesive application. The voice-coil lead is suspended in air rather than bonded to the edge, so it does not interfere with the diaphragm’s motion. Proprietary aluminum-alloy voice-coil wire supports this arrangement.
Final’s Free Air Structure opens the airflow path through the rear of the driver, the ear pads, and the housing. A low driver resonant frequency allows the design to depend less on acoustic sealing for bass reproduction. The Transient Coil System adds a separate coil in series with the driver to reduce high-frequency output without adding mass to the moving assembly. Together, these elements support Final’s approach to combining an open acoustic structure with a lightweight diaphragm, edge, and voice coil.
Breathable Pads and a Detachable Cable
The ear pads combine highly breathable foam with a special fabric containing Japanese washi paper. They are designed to provide a dry feel while allowing airflow rather than forming a tight acoustic seal. The headband uses the same type of surface material. Unlike tool-free replaceable pads, the DX6000’s pads are secured with special screws and must be replaced by Final; user replacement invalidates product-warranty coverage.
A detachable 3 m OFC slim cable terminates in a 4-pin XLR plug. Developed for the DX series, the cable keeps weight low while providing a connection to compatible headphone amplifiers. A compact semi-hard case is also included for storage and transport.
Amplifier matching matters here: the Transient Coil System causes impedance to rise from 47 ohms at 1 kHz to 480 ohms at 20 kHz. Final recommends a desktop amplifier with sufficient power and support for high-impedance loads rather than portable equipment.
