Final Audio DX10000 CL Closed-Back Dynamic Headphones

A 40 mm CVD-grown True Diamond driver, N55 neodymium motor, five-axis-machined housing, and 12-point through-bolt construction

The Final Audio DX10000 CL is a closed-back flagship built around a newly developed 40 mm dynamic driver with a True Diamond diaphragm. Rather than applying a diamond coating to another diaphragm material, Final produces the central dome from diamond grown by chemical vapor deposition, or CVD, and develops the suspension, voice coil, magnetic circuit, housing, and internal acoustics around its mechanical properties.

The closed-back enclosure receives the same level of attention. A five-axis-machined aluminum-magnesium housing, controlled internal damping, carefully vented Ultrasuede ear pads, and a 12-point through-bolt structure are designed to make rigidity and airtightness predictable parts of the acoustic system rather than incidental properties of the enclosure.

True Diamond Diaphragm

Diamond combines extremely high stiffness with excellent internal damping, characteristics that are particularly useful in a diaphragm. High bending rigidity helps the dome retain its intended shape as it moves, while internal loss helps unwanted vibration decay quickly after the input signal stops.

Final manufactures the diaphragm by growing diamond on silicon using CVD and then removing the silicon substrate. The finished diamond dome uses a steep profile together with cylindrical ribs around its perimeter. This geometry was developed to balance rigidity with the moving mass of diamond, which is denser than materials such as beryllium.

Final reports extremely low distortion from the completed driver, including distortion below 100 Hz reduced to less than one-hundredth that of its conventional reference design.

Special Polyurethane Surround and Rigid Voice-Coil Assembly

The weight and stiffness of the diamond dome place unusual demands on its suspension. Final uses a specially formulated polyurethane surround selected for low mass, high elasticity, and resistance to the deterioration traditionally associated with polyurethane materials.

A lightweight polyimide bobbin adds rigidity to the voice-coil assembly so that driving force is transferred cleanly to the diaphragm. Final also avoids attaching the voice-coil lead wires to the surround. Instead, the leads are suspended and routed directly to the terminals, maintaining better mechanical symmetry around the moving system. A specially developed high-strength aluminum-alloy wire is used to withstand repeated flexing.

N55 Magnetic Circuit and Internal Damping

The motor uses N55 neodymium magnets to provide a high-density magnetic field and strong control over the moving assembly. An aluminum shorting ring in the magnetic circuit generates opposing eddy currents that reduce the voice coil's inductive effects and stabilize the magnetic field, particularly during large low-frequency excursions.

Behind the diaphragm, precisely shaped acoustic damping material controls reflections within the driver assembly. Final treats the damping system, magnetic circuit, diaphragm, and suspension as a single driver unit rather than tuning each component independently.

Rigid, Airtight Five-Axis-Machined Housing

Closed-back headphones depend on controlled air behavior inside the enclosure, making both rigidity and sealing important. The DX10000 CL housing is machined from aluminum-magnesium alloy using five-axis CNC equipment, allowing steep surfaces and complex internal geometry that would be difficult to produce with conventional three-axis machining.

Material is removed internally to reduce weight while preserving structural rigidity. Acoustic material is then placed within the machined cavities to control resonances created by those spaces.

The outer housing, driver assembly, and front plate are clamped together by 12 through-bolts. Because the design does not depend on adhesive for the main structural joint, it provides strong, evenly distributed clamping while also allowing the assembly to be disassembled for service.

Ultrasuede Ear Pads

Rather than completely sealing the space around the ear, Final uses Ultrasuede for controlled air permeability. Its fine fiber structure allows a small amount of airflow while maintaining an acoustic seal, helping Final shape the low-frequency response without compensating with an exaggerated high-frequency balance. Specially selected foam establishes the pad volume and fit.

Two Silver-Coated Cables

The DX10000 CL includes two silver-coated OFC cables developed with Junkosha. The 1.5 m balanced cable uses a 4.4 mm connector and ePTFE insulation, chosen for its low dielectric constant. The 3 m cable uses a 4-pin XLR connector, larger-cross-section conductors, and durable PFA insulation for stationary systems.

Final also includes adapters for connecting either supplied cable to a 6.3 mm headphone output.
