Dual moving coil with horizontal PCOCC coils, 0.65 mil conical stylus with duralumin cantilever, safe on stereo records

The AT33xMONO/I is a purpose-built mono cartridge engineered for microgroove vinyl (i.e. not shellac records).

Its rigid body uses Hanenite, Audio-Technica's proprietary high-damping material. The voice coils are arranged horizontally so the generator responds only to horizontal groove motion—the information that encodes mono. Compliance is still appropriate in the vertical plane, making it safe to use on stereo records.

A 0.65 mil conical stylus is mounted to a hard duralumin cantilever for dependable tracking and stable tone. The PCOCC (Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting) coils provide a clean signal path, and the design’s rejection of vertical artifacts helps the cartridge ignore many of the strain components that come from groove wear and light damage, yielding cleaner mono playback than a typical stereo cartridge summed to mono.
