The Rega Planar 6 RS edition now has a dual-pulley, splitting the hard rotational work over two belts.
The more belts, the merrier, says Rega.
"I've never met a person," says Bryce Allan, "who has destroyed their own turntable. It's always the housekeeper, a nephew, or the cat."
Bryce is with The Sound Organization, Rega's US distributor, and he's extolling the first advantage of the Planar 6 RS: It's a near-reference model, but comes in a rectangular shape, rather than the polarizing skeletal design of the Planar 8 upwards. This means a nice, tight dustcover to guard against stray Swiffers, prodding fingers, and errant toe beans.
The RS Edition also boasts a beautiful metal skin. "Zoom into the photos and look at those exquisite edges," says Bryce. Photos are all we have right now, as the table is due only at the end of May, but we ran into Bryce at AXPONA and were inspired by his enthusiasm for the new arrival from one of our favorite turntable brands.
"It has our best moving-magnet cartridge, the Nd9. They're as rare as hen's teeth right now, but don't worry, we fit them to the bundles first before selling them separately."
The dual pulley is the other notable upgrade on the 6 RS. "It's all mathematics," says Bryce. "If you have a tiny error on one belt, the effect is divided across the number of belts." This is why the top-flight Naia (which was playing some beautiful music as we spoke in the Rega room) has no less than three belts.
The supplied tonearm with the Planar 6 RS is the RB880, which is usually found on the Planar 8. As with the standard model, the RS Edition includes a custom-matched Neo MK2 external power supply and a hand-tuned, low-noise 24 V motor that drives an aluminum sub platter.
