A Very Special Production

Fyne Audio's SP treatment adds several upgrades to key models.

Fyne adds the coveted SP badge to another model in this much-awaited launch

When we first brought on Fyne Audio, we asked you to imagine it as the Skunk Works division of your favorite heritage audio brand. After all, it was founded by a crack team of longtime Tannoy employees who found themselves both freed from tradition and steeped in it, and were able to use this to develop a totally new yet totally familiar loudspeaker.

Now, imagine a performance wing within this Skunk Works–style company, and you get Special Production, or SP. Fyne Audio's SP treatment is the M division to your BMW, the ceramic bearing option on your Chris King hubs, and the grating of white truffle over your pasta.

Most key models have an SP version, but the one we've all been waiting for is the SP edition of the mighty F704, and it's finally here.

A Very Special Production

The new F704SP is currently Fyne's top modern-design speaker before you get into the F1 series. With two 12" drivers on the front, it is imposing even when surrounded by large speakers in a showroom. The main IsoFlare driver is the same as that in the F1-12, with its massive neodymium HF magnet system and 3” titanium dome.

Improvements over the regular F704 include:

  • A redesigned crossover with upgraded components, including ClarityCap capacitors and Vishay resistors
  • In-house cryogenic treatment of the complete crossover
  • Other component upgrades, such as Neotech PC-OCC internal wiring and WBT NextGen 0703 terminals
  • A heavy F1 Series-grade machined aluminum plinth with heavy-duty M12 threaded support cones, adjustable from above
Fyne Audio BassTrax diffusor

The secret to Fyne's amazing bass is BassTrax, a specially shaped diffusor that allows for a 360-degree wave.

Even though the F1 series is the flagship for Fyne, you'll notice that the F704 ($19,000/pr), F703SP ($20,000/pr), and now, the F704SP ($26,000/pr) are more expensive than the F1-8S ($18,000/pr), the smallest F1 floorstander. This is because the F700 floorstanders are big boys—the F703 has two 10" drivers, and as mentioned, the F704 with its two 12" drivers is quite a spectacle, even standing still.

While the 8" F1-8S will have the last word in detail and finesse, it will never pressurize a bigger room the way the F704 will. Speakers that move a lot of air offer a truly immersive experience, and if you want 12" driver immersion with F1 performance, it'll take the F1-12S at $52,500/pr. That's an experience that is worth every penny, but not suitable for every system and budget. This makes the Fyne Audio F704SP one of the most exciting high-end speakers we sell.
