Packing Gear for Transport
The Ins and Outs of Packing Your Gear for Transport
It's always a good idea to keep the original packaging for any piece of gear. If it ever needs to be serviced by the manufacturer, or if you ever sell it to someone across the country, having the original packing is helpful to keep your gear secure. It also helps with resale value! You must pack your gear EXACTLY how it came to you.
But that's not all you need to do in order to make sure your gear arrives safely!
Remember: It is the job of UPS and Fedex to deny insurance claims if your package is damaged in transit. If you ship something in a used box, even if it was only used once, the delivery driver could have run over your box with his truck while talking on his cell phone, and your claim will be denied if the box appears used. All the insurance in the world won't mean anything if your claim is denied...
The moral of the story? ALWAYS put a fresh box around the original packing, even if it's already double boxed. It may cost a few bucks to do it, but trust me... it's worth it. That's why we always double box our equipment (and in some cases we triple box). We want to make sure your gear gets to you as safely as possible, and we only want the same for you if you ever need to re-ship it.
